UN Secretary General Guterres issued a statement on the 14th, calling on all parties to immediately end the armed conflict in the Gaza Strip with Israel.

According to China News Agency, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been escalating in recent days. Palestinian armed groups fired about 2,000 rockets into Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing at least 8 people on the Israeli side; Israeli air strikes on Palestine resulted in the deaths of more than 100 people.

Guterres said the continued military escalation has caused severe suffering and destruction, and a large number of civilians have been killed, including many children. Conflicts may trigger uncontrollable security and humanitarian crises, and may further fuel extremism in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Israel, and surrounding areas.

Guterres stated that all parties must strengthen their mediation efforts to end the conflict immediately. He stated that the United Nations is actively participating in mediation, which is also vital to providing much-needed humanitarian assistance to the affected people in the Gaza Strip.

He once again emphasized that he will be committed to working with all parties including the Quartet on the Middle East issue to support Israel and Palestine in resolving conflicts on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements.

The UN Security Council will hold a meeting on the situation between Israel and Palestine on May 16.
