Indian Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi urged the government to lock down the country to curb the spread of the epidemic after the cumulative number of confirmed cases of coronary disease in the country broke through 20 million on Tuesday (4th).
Reuters reported that Rahul Gandhi, now a member of Congress, said on Twitter: “The only way to stop the spread of the coronavirus is to block the entire country… The inaction of the Indian government has cost a large number of innocent people. Life.”
The Ministry of Health of India announced earlier on Tuesday that there was an increase of 357,229 confirmed cases and 3,449 deaths in the past 24 hours. The total number of confirmed cases nationwide reached 2.03 million and the cumulative number of deaths reached 222,408. Experts suspect that the true number may not stop there.
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the authorities in the capital of New Delhi requested the military to provide assistance because the city’s hospitals no longer have vacant intensive care units and there is a severe shortage of medical oxygen.
The Delhi government hopes to hand over the management of both Covid-19 care facilities and intensive care units to the military.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been reluctant to declare a “country lockdown” because of concerns that the lockdown measures will severely impact the economy. However, many states have implemented social restrictions to deal with the epidemic.
