In Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, a railroad track bridge collapsed and a train fell from the bridge. So far, 20 people have died and 49 people have been sent to hospital.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 pm local time on Monday night in Olivos, southeast of the city. The video broadcast by the local media showed that the train fell as the railway bridge collapsed, crushing many cars on the highway below, and dust and rubble were flying all over the sky.
Children were among the dead and injured. Soon after the incident, the authorities temporarily suspended rescue operations in view of the risk that more trains might crash into the road.
Mexico City Mayor Simbaum said: “Because the train is very weak,” rescue work has been suspended. She said that the cranes transported to the scene are trying to stabilize the train carriages so that rescuers can resume the search to find if there are more people in the train carriages.
She said that there appears to be a beam on the flyover that has shifted, but the cause of the accident is under investigation.
