A fire broke out in the intensive care unit of a hospital in the Bharuch district of Gujarat, Gujarat, that killed at least 16 coronary disease patients and two nurses.

Agence France-Presse reported that the fire occurred at around 1:00 AM local time on Saturday (May 1st) and the fire was extinguished.

A police officer told AFP that the current death toll from the fire is 18, including 16 patients and two nurses.

The police officer said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the intensive care unit of the hospital.”

At the time of the incident, there were about 50 other patients in the hospital. After they were rescued by rescuers, they were transferred to other hospitals for treatment.

Indian Prime Minister Modi tweeted that he felt grief for the loss of life caused by the fire and mourned the families of the deceased.

The coronavirus epidemic in India is severe, with more than 400,000 new confirmed cases on Saturday, becoming the first country in the world to add more than 400,000 new cases within 24 hours.
