United Nations: Half of Myanmar’s population may live in poverty next year

The United Nations said that half of Myanmar’s population may live in poverty next year, driven by the coup and the political crisis triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Agence France-Presse reported that the United Nations Development Program said on Friday (30th) that by early 2022, Myanmar may have 25 million people or nearly half of the population living below the poverty line. UNDP Administrator Steiner said the crisis may reverse Myanmar’s progress in halving the number of poor people since 2005.

Steiner said in a statement: “Without the operation of a democratic system, Myanmar will face a tragic and avoidable level of poverty that a generation has never seen before.”
