Four dead gray whales (Gray whale) have appeared on the beaches of the San Francisco Bay Area in California in the past nine days. Experts said that two of them were hit by a ship and the cause of the other two deaths is still under investigation.
Reuters reported that Dugenan, director of pathology at the California Marine Mammal Center, said: “It is shocking to deal with the deaths of four gray whales in just one week. This really shows us what this species is currently facing. Challenge.”
In 2019, at least 13 dead whales washed ashore in the Bay Area.
The center’s research team found that starvation, entanglement with fishing gear, and trauma from boat impact are the most common causes of gray whale deaths.
