Seoul is in the cherry blossom season, but unfortunately it is still shrouded in the shadow of the coronavirus epidemic.

The South Korean epidemic prevention department said that although the trend of the Coronavirus epidemic in South Korea needs further observation, the possibility of a fourth wave of pandemic is increasing.

Yonhap News Agency reported that Taeho Yoon, head of the Epidemic Prevention Team of the Central Emergency Response Headquarters of South Korea, said on Wednesday (7th) that since January 10, the number of new community cases in a single day exceeded 600 again in three months, both in the capital and non-capital areas. The scale of confirmed cases has increased.

The average daily number of new confirmed cases in the metropolitan area in the past week was 324.6, an increase of 31.5 from the previous week (293.1), and in the non-capital area, it was 199.1, close to 200. According to the mobile phone positioning statistics released by the government, the population movement in the metropolitan area last weekend increased by 0.6% compared with the previous weekend.

Yin Taihao said that the third wave of the epidemic lasted for a long time, which aggravated the exhaustion of the people and relaxed the social epidemic prevention atmosphere. He emphasized that this is the time to be vigilant. He called on the people to restrain themselves, cancel unnecessary gatherings, and strictly abide by the epidemic prevention rules.

South Korea reported 668 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, exceeding 600 after a lapse of 48 days, the highest since January 8 (674 cases).

South Korean Prime Minister Ding Shijun said at the cabinet meeting that day: “If the fourth wave of the epidemic becomes a reality, it will interfere with vaccination and will deal a heavy blow to our economy.”

He promised that the government will do its utmost to mobilize all possible means to prevent the occurrence of the fourth wave of the epidemic
