A WHO spokesperson said that the WHO Advisory Group will “soon” make a statement on the AstraZeneca vaccine for covid-19.
Reuters reported that as the number of countries suspending the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine increases, global health experts are increasingly under pressure to resolve the safety of the vaccine.
The European Medicines Agency said it is investigating reports of 30 abnormal blood diseases among 5 million people vaccinated with AstraZeneca. A total of 45 million doses of vaccine have been injected throughout Europe.
O’Brien, director of the WHO Department of Immunization, Vaccines, and Biology, said that the WHO Vaccine Safety Group on Tuesday is evaluating whether side effects such as blood clots are related to vaccination.
He said at the press conference: “We should not over-interpret these specific numbers in the trial. They are highly effective vaccines, life-saving vaccines, and safe vaccines. We should continue to deploy them.”
He said: “Therefore, anyone who is scheduled for vaccination should accept it. This will ensure that the vaccine produced will get the maximum benefit.”
