Thousands of women and women gathered on Tuesday (May 28) to hold a “green handkerchief” demonstration outside the Argentine capital parliament, asking Congress to pass a bill allowing safe and legal abortion. Last year, the relevant bill was rejected in the Senate with a small number of votes. This year, it was once again critical and received much female support.
According to the Argentine Ministry of Health, there are at least 350,000 illegal abortions in the country each year, which is the main cause of maternal deaths.
The current law in Argentina only allows abortions in women who are endangered by the fetus or who are conceived.
